Anxiety is the body’s natural response to danger, an automatic alarm that goes off when a person feels threatened, under pressure, or is facing a stressful situation. Everyone experiences anxiety from time to time. Someone might feel anxious when faced with a problem at work, before taking a test, or when making an important decision. It’s normal. However, it isn’t normal if this anxiety doesn’t go away and in fact, gets worse over time. Call us today and schedule an appointment with one of our anxiety therapists.
Anxiety-based mood disorders can take a serious toll, both physical and emotional. For some people, it can become so frequent or forceful that it interferes with daily activities such as job performance, school work and relationships.
Symptoms of Anxiety
Even if you don’t necessarily feel nervous, you may be experiencing side-effects of anxiety. Some people never realize that they have anxiety issues until it becomes severe enough to cause a panic attack.
Let your Park City or Jupiter/Palm Beach Gardens, anxiety therapist know if you’re experiencing any of the following:
If you are, you may be suffering from anxiety without knowing it.
“Am I Having a Panic Attack?”
When you aren’t aware of anxiety and it has built up to a point that your body can no longer cope with the excessive stress, it may result in a clinical condition known as a “panic attack.”
Panic attacks are physical in nature, causing significant changes in your body such as tremors, chest pains, feeling faint, a rapid heartbeat, and feeling as though you have lost control.
It’s not uncommon for our Florida and Utah therapy clients to mistake their anxiety attack for a heart attack.
When Anxiety Interferes With Everyday Life
Thousands of people experience anxiety, but only about 1 out of 3 of them will reach out for help with a licensed therapist. The inconvenience and embarrassment of feeling a loss of control is one of the most common misconceptions that our Utah and Florida anxiety clients experience.
Talking to our Jupiter/Palm Beach Gardens or Park City anxiety therapists is one of the best ways to learn coping mechanisms to overcome high stress triggers and reduce the occurrence of panic attacks, if not avoid them completely.
The Dell Center for Therapy offers convenient in-person sessions as well as online anxiety counseling for our Utah or Florida clients. You can book your appointment today to get started!
Anxiety disorders can manifest themselves in several ways. There are six major types, each with distinct symptoms:
If constant worries and fears distract someone from their day-to-day activities, or if they’re troubled by a persistent feeling that something bad is going to happen, they may be suffering from Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD). Anxiety caused by GAD often manifests itself with physical symptoms such as insomnia, stomach upset, restlessness and fatigue.
Characterized by repeated, unexpected panic attacks, as well as a fear of experiencing another attack, a panic disorder may also be accompanied by agoraphobia, which is the fear of being in places where escape or help would be difficult in the event of a panic attack. If someone has agoraphobia, they are likely to avoid public places or confined spaces.
Someone suffering from a phobia has an unrealistic or exaggerated fear of a specific object, activity or situation that in reality presents little to no danger. Common phobias include fear of animals such as snakes and spiders, fear of flying and fear of heights.
If someone has a debilitating fear of being seen negatively by others and humiliated in public, they may have social anxiety disorder. This can manifest itself in extreme shyness and in severe cases, avoidance of all social situations. Stage fright is one of the most common types of social phobia.
Also known as Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, OCD is a common, long-lasting disorder in which a person has uncontrollable, recurring thoughts and urges that cause anxiety, and manifest themselves as behaviors that are repeated over and over. At The Dell Center, our Park City and Jupiter/Palm Beach Gardens therapists use a team approach to address the disorder, including a combination of individual therapy, group therapy and medication if appropriate, based on our client’s specific needs.
Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (or PTSD) can occur after a particularly traumatic event, with triggers that can bring back memories of the trauma accompanied by intense emotional and physical reactions including flashbacks, nightmares and anxiety. At The Dell Center, we create a treatment plan based on several factors, including the source of the trauma, the nature of the trauma and the age of the victim at the time of the trauma. We then work closely with the client, as a team, to both manage the symptoms and work through the traumatic event.
